‘Chair’ by Robert Clatworthy RA

A sculptural chair by British artist Robert Clatworthy RA (1928–2015), made from wood and resin. Conceived as sculpture rather than conventional furniture, the work reduces the familiar form of a chair to an expressive, almost totemic silhouette. The work is illustrated in Clatworthy’s catalogue raisonné.

Clatworthy was a significant figure in post-war British sculpture. He studied under Bernard Meadows, worked as an assistant to Henry Moore and taught alongside a generation that included Anthony Caro, Elisabeth Frink and Eduardo Paolozzi. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1973, and his work is represented in collections including Tate and the V&A.
