Four Sandows Chairs by Rene Herbst, c.1980

A set of four Sandows Chairs designed by Rene Herbst and retailed through Harrods in the 1980s. 

René Herbst (1891–1982) was a pioneering French designer and co-founder of the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM), whose work helped define European modernism. Rejecting the ornamentation of Art Déco, Herbst championed functional, industrial design using innovative materials.

Introduced at the 1929 Salon d’Automne, the Chaise Sandows epitomises his philosophy. Its nickel-plated tubular steel frame is paired with a seat and back formed from taut rubber straps, creating a design that is both uncompromisingly functional and visually striking. The chair was unveiled at the same exhibition where Le Corbusier first presented his own tubular steel furniture.

These examples are later twentieth-century editions. The Chaise Sandows remains one of the defining icons of modern furniture design and is represented in the collections of MoMA and other major international museums.
